The History of the WEC/UFC Bantamweight Title

Looking back on the history of the division, they’ve had some great champions and contenders.

  1. Eddie Wineland - Current Record: 21-10-1 - Won at WEC 20 when he beat Antonio Banuelos by 1st round TKO. Wouldn’t defend the title as he dropped it to Chase Beebe at WEC 26. Loss a bid to get his title back at UFC 165.
  2. Chase Beebe - Current Record: 24-12-1 - Won the title from Eddie Wineland at WEC 26. Would defend it once at WEC 30 against Rani Yahya before losing the title to Miguel Torres at WEC 32.
  3. Miguel Tores - Current Record: 43-7 - Won the belt at WEC 32 from Chase Beebe and would defend the title against Yoshiro Maeda, Manny Tapia, and Takeya Mizugaki before dropping the title to Brian Bowles at WEC 42, suffering his first KO loss in the process.
  4. Brian Bowles - Current Record: 10-3 - Won the belt from Miguel Torres at WEC 42 via 1st round knockout. Would lose the title in his next fight when he broke his hand fighting Dominick Cruz. Loss his title eliminator back at UFC 139 against Urijah Faber.
  5. Dominick Cruz - Current Record: 19-1 - Won the belt at WEC 47 when he beat Brian Bowles. He’d defend the WEC belt twice against Joseph Benavidez and Scott Jorgensen. After beating Jorgensen, he was awarded the inaugural UFC bantamweight title. He’d go on to defend the UFC belt against former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber and future UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. A torn ACL and 3 years of rehab forced to Cruz to vacate the title.
  6. Renan Barao - Current Record: 32-2 - Barao would win the interim title in a bout with Urijah Faber at UFC 149 after Cruz was forced to vacate. He’d defend the interim title against Michael McDonald and former WEC Bantamweight champ Eddie Wineland before a bout with Cruz was announced to unify the title at UFC 169. Cruz would be forced to pull out of the fight and Faber stepped in. Barao would win the bout by TKO in the first and would be promoted to UFC Bantamweight champion. He’d drop the title to TJ Dillashaw in his next bout at UFC 173.
  7. TJ Dillashaw - Current Record: 10-2 - Dillashaw became only the 4th alumni from TUF to win the title when he knocked out Renan Barao in the 5th round at UFC 173 in what is considered to be one of the greatest upsets in MMA history. He’s set to make his first title defense in a rematch against Barao at UFC 177.
